Papers cover variety of activities primarily conducted by Springfield Land District Office. Documents include military land warrants; preemption affidavits and declarations; app;ications to purchase land; conveyances; abstracts of land sold; land patents and lists of patents delivered; powers of attorney; surveys, field notes and plats; certificates of relinquishment; Receivers' receipts; Registers' certificates; inventories of office furniture and supplies; forfeited land stock; register of land entered at Springfield under Homestead Act of 1862; homestead applications of Congressional act of 1872; and incoming correspondence from federal and state officials and private individuals. Some records were interfiled by Auditor of Public Accounts after he was given custodly of files in 1879.

In 1865 counties and cities were authorized to issue bonds in support of subscriptions to the capital stock of railroad companies or in aid of any public improvement (L. 1865, p. 44).
